Pair of 17th Century Charles Ⅱ Walnut Chairs

A fine pair of walnut side chairs from the late 17th century. The restoration of the monarchy after Cromwell's death saw the return of Charles Stuart from exile in Europe. He brought with him a taste for Continental decor and furnishings, which included these chairs. Light and easily moved, they were the epitome of elegance, after the heavy oak chairs and stools that previously furnished wealthy houses.
Made of walnut, they are carved throughout, with caned back panels and seats. The cresting rail, back upright panels and front rail are carved with flowers and foliage. Other rails, with barley twist turnings, contribute to the decorative elegance of the style.
These chairs have come through the centuries extremely well, acquiring a perfect patination that shows off the warm tones of aged walnut. The feet have been repaired, and an old blacksmiths metal repair on the back leg of one chair has been effective for a long time, so it has been left in place. Otherwise the chairs are in wonderful condition, the caning intact and the pegged construction undisturbed. Circa 1680
