Mid 19th Century Papier Mache Pole Screen V489

An exceptional mid 19th century papier mache fire screen on an ebonised pole. The lacquered screen is painted, a still life with urn, flowers and grapes, and bordered by gold stencilled twining wreaths.
The pole has a gilded finial and platform base. There is a gilded brass mechanism on the back, allowing the screen to slide up and down, protecting a fine lady from the heat of a fire.
Decorative and in the best condition. Circa 1840
